Facilities

The School of Veterinary Science offers an outstanding range of facilities for the conduct of laboratory-based, animal-based, clinical and field research.

Diagnostic and research laboratories

Daignostic Services facilitiesThe School’s newly built diagnostic and research laboratories include equipment and facilities for molecular biology, genetics, microbiology, parasitology, virology, immunology, pharmacology, pathology, proteomics and reproductive physiology research. Key equipment includes deconvolution and fluorescent microscopes, flow cytometer, HPLC and UPLC Mass Spec, sequencing machine, equipment for SNP genotyping, microtomes and automated slide staining for processing of histological samples, automatic haematology and biochemistry analysers, a cytospin for cytology and fluid analysis preparation, as well as standard laboratory items such as real-time PCR and conventional PCR machines, biohazard cabinets, spectrophotometer, microplate readers, freeze dryers, incubators, and centrifuges.

The Queensland Animal Science Precinct

Staff in the School have access to exceptional facilities for animal-based research, including livestock, companion animal and laboratory animal research. The Queensland Animal Science Precinct (QASP) is a world class research centre located on the Gatton campus.  The facilities at QASP accommodate a broad range of large and small animal trials, including PC1 and PC2 large animal experimental and surgery facilities. It provides quality facilities for nutrition, pharmacology and infectious disease research.

The Clinical Studies Centre

Clinical Studies Centre Gatton CampusThe School’s Clinical Studies Centre provides excellent facilities for canine and feline research, and within the Vet Science building there are facilities for conduct of research on small laboratory animals.

Veterinary clinics and hospitals

The School’s veterinary clinics and hospitals provide access to clinical cases and materials, which enhances the conduct of high-quality clinical research. Key clinical equipment includes a CT scanner, digital radiography and ultrasound, nuclear scintigraphy and a fluoroscope. 

Farm animal facilities

Cows at Gatton CampusThe School also has access to a variety of farm animal facilities on or near the Gatton campus including a dairy, a piggery, poultry housing, sheep and beef cattle farms.
