New e-book to be published

A novel and interactive learning resource has been developed by Parasitology staff in the School of Veterinary Science to assist undergraduate and postgraduate students with practical aspects of their parasitology learning. The e-book, covering common parasites of veterinary importance, was designed by Ms Lyn Knott, Principal Scientific Officer.

A small Teaching and Learning grant was secured in 2014 which allowed the ebook to be developed further, and 2nd and 3rd year students have had the opportunity over the last 12 months to use the components of the ebook which were made available on Blackboard. These components include interactive identification keys, summary tables and charts with embedded high resolution images of parasites, standard operating procedures with embedded instructional videos, image galleries and many other useful tools.

The general feedback has been overwhelmingly positive - the students are finding its interactive nature and strong visual focus to be extremely beneficial to their learning. There have been some issues in developing the ebook on a platform that is accessible for both apple and android devices, however, the University is currently considering the purchase of a brand new publishing platform (Digital Commons) which we hope will provide a solution to this issue. Once the ebook has been adapted to this new platform, it should be available for release shortly afterwards.
