Dr Jackie Campbell has been announced as a recipient of the University of Queensland’s Distinguished Young Alumni Awards.
Whilst palliative care is a relatively new field of veterinary health in Australia, the ongoing work of pioneering vets like Dr Campbell is slowly changing this.
The award winners were nominated by their peers and selected by a committee led by UQ Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Peter Høj.
Professor Høj said the winners were proven leaders who had taken on major challenges and responsibilities and created positive change.
“The impact UQ has in communities around the world is not limited to cutting-edge research, but encompasses the actions and accomplishments of our 236,000 alumni,” he said.
“Our UQ alumni family is a constant source of inspiration.”
Dr Jackie Campbell graduated from The University of Queensland veterinary science programme in 2006, and in 2014 founded Sunset Home Veterinary Care - one of Australia’s first mobile palliative care services, delivering individualised home based veterinary care to families with pets approaching end of life.
“The best veterinary care is about more than just medicine. For me, it’s about really treasuring the final weeks and months with our pets and helping to support those families who are struggling with all the decisions they are faced with when caring for a sick or ageing pet,” Dr Campbell said.
The recipients will be celebrated at UQ’s annual Courting the Greats ceremony on 19 October.
