School of Veterinary Science NCP International Study Experience
In 2025, the School of Veterinary Science is offering 16 students the exclusive opportunity to explore the dynamic world of veterinary science exploring both farm animal enterprises and companion animal practices in Hong Kong and China over 4 weeks. This program will help you develop critical skills to enhance your veterinary career by providing invaluable cross-cultural learning experiences and exposure to cutting edge veterinary practices.
You will encounter diverse approaches to animal health, disease prevention, and production management, and you will explore how to balance health, welfare, and production goals in both companion and livestock populations. Through practical experiences, hands-on workshops, site visits, and interactions with industry professionals, you will gain valuable insight into the cultural and professional dynamics of veterinary work in Hong Kong and China, the challenges veterinary professionals face, and the innovations that mitigate them.
Throughout the program, you will also participate in classes and activities to develop Chinese language and cultural skills, boosting your intercultural competencies and broadening opportunities for research and professional engagement within this region in the future.

The 4-week program will include activities at the following key destinations:
City University of Hong Kong Jockey Club College of Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences
The 3-day program includes:
- veterinary medical centre
- Beas River Retired Racehorse Retraining Unit.
Henan Dairy Herd Improvement Centre, Zhengzhou
The 3-day program includes:
- modern dairy farms and operational insights
- cutting-edge dairy research facilities.
South China Agricultural University, Guangzhou
The 3-week program includes:
- small animal veterinary clinic
- research and diagnostic laboratories
- workshops and case studies
- Chinese language and cultural classes.
Supported by the New Colombo Plan (NCP), a signature initiative of the Australian Government, this program is designed to boost your employability and builds on UQ’s established partnerships with City University of Hong Kong and South China Agricultural University, allowing you to develop a deeper understanding of the global veterinary landscape. The UQ academic lead of this program is Professor Joerg Henning from the School of Veterinary Science.
NCP funding will support 16 students enrolled in the Bachelor of Veterinary Science (Honours) to participate in this 4-week program to Hong Kong and China. Selected students will each be offered a mobility grant of AUD $4,000 to support the cost of participation.
