An inspirational University of Queensland teacher who is held in high regard by his students has been recognised with a 2016 award for teaching excellence in the Federal Government’s Australian Awards for University Teaching.

Professor Paul Mills, of UQ’s School of Veterinary Science  and a UQ veterinary science graduate (1987) is a veterinary pharmacologist and an internationally-recognised leader in innovative veterinary education.

“I am humbled and grateful for this honour,” Professor Mills said.

“I try to combine innovation in classroom teaching with scholarship and reflection to prepare students both in terms of knowledge and social development, to excel as professionals.”

Australian Awards for University Teaching celebrate the nation’s most outstanding university teachers in their fields.

Professor Mills was recognised in the biological sciences, health and related studies category.

He previously received both a UQ teaching award and another national teaching award as a 2007 recipient of an Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC) Teaching Excellence Award (Early Career) recognising his work in incorporating life skills in a professional program.

His contributions to teaching and learning continue to be highly successful and inspirational, more recently with his initiatives to enhance outcomes for international students and mentoring early career academics.

As the leader of a global collaboration in curriculum development involving the US, South Korea and Europe, he has also helped lead the introduction of an advanced veterinary curriculum in SE Asia.

Head of School and a previous recipient of UQ and ALTC Teaching Excellence awards, Professor Glen Coleman congratulated Professor Mills on his new award.

“Paul is shaping the field of veterinary education at institutional, national and global levels, ensuring sustained learning outcomes for students in the School of Veterinary Science while also establishing strong pathways for career development for both graduates and veterinary educators,” Professor Coleman said.

“During the School’s 80th anniversary we are delighted that the high quality teaching expertise of our staff continues to be recognised.”
