Prestigious international appointment for senior UQ veterinary scientist

Head of The University of Queensland School of Veterinary Science Professor Nigel Perkins has been appointed to the board of directors of the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC).

Professor Perkins will serve as the Officer/Director at Large representing region III (Australian, New Zealand, Asia) for the Association, which aims to promote and protect the health and welfare of animals, people and the environment.

Professor Perkins said the AAVMC comprised 30 colleges and schools of veterinary medicine in the United States, five Canadian colleges, eight US departments of comparative medicine, eight international veterinary schools (including UQ), three veterinary medical education organisations, and four affiliate international veterinary schools.

Professor Perkins is an internationally renowned veterinary academic and a leader in UQ’s“One Health” initiative linking animal, human and ecosystem health.

He has worked at veterinary schools in Australia, New Zealand and the US, and has considerable international experience in working as a consultant veterinary epidemiologist in many countries, particularly Oceania and Asian Regions.

 He is the current Chair of the Thoroughbred Advisory Panel for Agrifutures Australia.

The UQ School of Veterinary Science has full accreditation with the Australasian Veterinary Boards Council, the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and the American Veterinary Medical Association.

Professor Perkins represents UQ on the Veterinary Schools of Australia and New Zealand (VSANZ) body and is active in preparing for a multi-team accreditation visit to the UQ School of Veterinary Science in the second half of 2018

“I have just returned from my first meeting of the AAVMC group and was impressed with the collegiality and leadership networking provided by this form,” said Professor Perkins on returning from the 2018 Dean’s Conference in Naples, Florida.
