The Queensland Alliance for One Health Sciences (QAOHS), based at the School of Veterinary Science, was established in 2021.
Using UQ strategic funds, QAOHS brings together organisational units across UQ conducting research into notifiable zoonotic diseases, foodborne risks, antimicrobial resistance, and the environment and comparative cancer epidemiology.
QAOHS staff and students work on national and internationally funded research, including:
- leading the Analytics Program of the Cooperative Research Centre on Solving Antimicrobial Resistance in Agribusinesses Food and Environment
- field research into zoonotic risks in Queensland as part of the Biosecurity and Emerging Infections theme of the NHMRC Health Environments and Health Lives Research Network
- development and technical advisory to WHO Southeast Asian Regional Office on protocols for Integrated Avian Influenza Surveillance
- World Bank-funded research to develop the One Health Risk Assessment Pathways for Central Asia.
Multi-disciplinary One Health research areas with impacts on human and ecosystem health include:
- food safety
- veterinary public health
- anti-microbial resistance
- zoonotic disease risk management.
Researchers are active in international collaborations in a range of developing countries with impacts on small-scale farmer management of animal health and production linked to ecosystem health and human health outcomes.
