Centre for Animal Welfare and Ethics (CAWE) Research in China

Wednesday, January 23, 2019 - 15:00
Centre for Animal Welfare and Ethics in China

The Centre for Animal Welfare and Ethics continues to grow its international livestock welfare collaborative project, with the third and largest stage about to commence with support from the Good Ventures Foundation, USA.

The project works towards increasing awareness of the World Animal Health (OIE) standards for animal welfare, with the purpose of improving animal welfare during farming, slaughter and transport. Since its beginning five years ago, over 1,500 leaders have been trained in animal welfare in China, Malaysia, Vietnam and Thailand. Training resources have been created and translated and research has been conducted and published in all collaborative countries.

Phase 3 will work to establish an internationally collaborative, but locally owned, animal welfare centre in China, the single country responsible for 39% of farmed animals worldwide.

The long term goal will be to establish similar centres across the region and further abroad to assist capacity building professionals to address animal welfare concerns in locally meaningful and domestically led ways.
